0. Happiness & Productivity

Updated: Sep 17, 2024

A recent paper published by the Said Business School* suggests that the happier the workforce the greater the productivity. Its case study demonstrated a 13% productivity improvement between ‘unhappy’ and ‘very happy’ employees.

Intuitive stuff, and many organisations now invest significant energy, and finances, on ‘well-being’ programmes which is great.

The problem with this investment is that the return for the employee and so the organisation is short term. It doesn’t stick because the frustrating tasks that add no value, and the under utilisation of talent to change this remain.

Edward Deming frequently advocated the idea that every employee should be able to achieve joy at work.

I loved this and made it the backbone of my approach. I believe we can achieve joy because of work – specifically, accomplishing work, being recognised for that and being trusted to make things even better.

As a result, creating environments that focus on accomplishment is a fundamental principle.

Continually increasing the amount we achieve for the effort we put in and creating a culture where people feel respected, supported and valued is how to promote both happiness and productivity and quickly achieve measurable benefits that are felt in the work place and reflected on the balance sheet simultaneously.
